Chivalry - Medieval Warfare PS4

I am very conscious of my continued sporadic posts of late and that my much heralded return has fallen somewhat flat. However, here I am and I thought I'd share my latest distraction with you.

Released originally on the PC some years ago, Chivalry Medieval Warfare is a first person , multiplayer hack-em-up very much in the mould of Monty Python's Holy Grail-meets-Brian Blessed which has made its way onto current-gen consoles and is available for around twelve quid on PlayStation Network. Though somewhat dated in its aesthetics and restricted in its map size, Chivalry soon grabs you by the gizzard and thrusts you into the mud, blood and rain of medieval carnage.

I say carnage advisedly as the game does a sterling job of depicting heads, limbs and armour flying in all directions under a rain of blows from all manner of period weaponry. The controls are fairly intuitive and allow you to wield your weapon in a number of different ways; critical for victory.

Game play is frantic and adrenaline inducing as damage and stamina is modelled with every swing, thrust or lung of your steel; momentarily depleting your strength,  resulting in a temporary lull in your ability to react, so timing and skill are essential. There is a real sense of achievement when you are victorious over your foe. I recall a particular scrap against a skilled opponent with my character bloodied and reeling; one more blow away from death, only for me to land a lucky(?) blow from my broad sword, removing the chap's leg before I finished him off with an overhead swing - YES!!

There are a number of game types - the usual death match, team death match and team objective, to name a few, with teams of up to 24 players per side. You choose from four classes of warrior and have the option to customise appearance and weapon load outs, with more being unlocked as you rank up.

To sum up, a  thrilling distraction that raises laughs, shouts and swearing, probably for all the wrong reasons. Buy it and I look forward to meeting you on the field of battle!

That's it for now,

Ryse: Son of Rome Official E3 Gameplay Demo

Is it to be the PS4 or Xbox One? Don't know, but games like this could tip the balance; Call of Duty meets the Roman army...looks fantastic.

The Walking Dead Video Game Episode 1

Just recently released on Xbox Live, is this latest incarnation of Robert Kirkman's graphic novel, The Walking Dead; this time in the form of an episodic, interactive point-and-click video game.

Designed to run in monthly serials and costing 80 Microsoft points, they represent great value and a truly engrossing experience for not only fans of The Walking Dead graphic novels, and/or the TV series, but also those who enjoy interactive drama adventures containing characters to be empathised with placed into life or death situations.

After completing the brief demo game, I downloaded the first chapter, ' A New Day' and was impressed and pleasantly surprised. The game is presented in the style of the graphic novel and Charlie Adlard's art style, although this time in flat, pastel colours, opposed to monochrome. I won't give any spoilers, but will say the game runs concurrently to the graphic novel and although some familiar faces appear in cameo, this is very much a stand alone affair.

The story revolves (so far) around a character called Lee Everett (no more information!) and those he encounters in newly zombie-infested Georgia.

As is the norm with this style of adventure, the action is presented in a branching story with user-defined decisions pushing the narrative in genuinely different directions with a variety of outcomes, including the deaths (or not) of key characters. I tried a couple of different interactions over two attempts of the game and was pleasantly surprised to see completely different scenes and repercussions play out; these will remain for the rest of the story.

This approach to the story's development creates a user-driven narrative - albeit along a pre-defined story arc - that is absorbing and keeps you glued to the screen for the duration of the chapter - well, it did me, anyway!

While it may not appeal to those who prefer the frenzied impulse-driven domain of FPS games, I found the first chapter of The Walking Dead great entertainment, which delivered a rewarding and tense experience and look forward to the release of the second instalment.

That's it for now!

Red Dead Redemption Gameplay Video Series: Introduction

I recently borrowed this the other day and can't recommend it enough; a fantastic source of entertainment, where, today for example, 3 hours simply vanished in its open-ended 'sandbox'-style game play.
It has it all - buckets of atmosphere, every western cliché under the sun, solid (non-linear) storyline, amazing graphics and an impressive musical score, all wrapped up in a major motion picture production where you carve out your own ending, rather than watching passively...oh, and there's no time to eat popcorn either...

On a miniatures gaming note plus, it has seriously inspired me to finally finish my Dixon 28mm stuff from last year and possibly look at 15mm western skirmishing; but there again, fickleness is one of my personal attributes...

That's it for now,
